For the past 8 or so years, the “thing” that has helped me the most is not a diet regiment, meditation, intense exercise, kale or even talk therapy…it’s journaling.
When I first realized there was something off with my approach to eating and food, I found a book that helped me kick start that process. Starting out, each evening I would spend the last hour of my day in my room following the activities/writing exercises in the book (I called this” Project Amy” time). Then I found it helpful to carry around my journal just in case I needed a go to spot to get some thoughts on to paper and out of my mind. This became the exact way I need to process my emotions, life events, changes in my thoughts etc.
I still to this day know that my journal is my number one safe zone. I can say whatever I want, in any tone I need. How amazing right?! To be unedited and honest in all ways with no filters! I also draw, add color and recreate inspirational images I have seen to make my journaling a source of personal inspiration (in addition to processing).
Journaling is one of the places in my life where I feel a complete sense of flow. Time melting away and I feel light years better each and every time after journaling.
When you write it down its amazing how freeing that feels. Not typing, or voice dictating; good ol’ pen (or marker to paper).
Unsure how to start?!
Set a timer for 5 minutes and write/draw. Anything that comes to or is on your mind. No matter how outrageous or ridiculous it sounds.
